Favorites Archive vol.1

What else is there to do on a rainy night like this, than sort out the archives ?

Zuco 103 End Of Tour LVC Leiden 14/10/2006

Jools Holland and his R&B Orchestra 16/3 Paradiso Amsterdam

Always a favorite annual knees-up, as these funny Brits say.
We missed Lady Sam Brown this year, but Ruby Turner was fantastic and got the whole Paradiso singing HiHoSilver with her

Patricia Vonne Band & Ollabelle LVC Leiden 24/4

Lovely Patricia Vonne who we first saw in the now closed QBus, another vanished venue in Leiden, where Hans van Polanen used to promote tasteful Americana line ups, like this concert
no.100, now in LVC
Patricia also acted as a kind of scary catwoman in her brother Roberto Rodriguez'( Oscar
winner was it? )movie Sin City, but in person she's a very gentle soul

By the way, the lady with the mandoline in the middle here is Levon Helm's daughter Amy.
Levon drummed and sang and played mandolines with the only band in the world known as THE BAND, the one that Dylan took to Europe in '65 or so to teach the swearing and"Judas!"-screaming orthodox folkies some electrics.OLLABELLE, named after a famous gospelsinger, kind of teaches the electric now crowd organic acoustics and soulclapping, wich they happily respond to for a change

Ian Parker LVC Leiden 29/5

Mr.Virtuoso Nice Guy

Parne Gadje - De X, Leiden 29/5

Parne Gadje, meaning something like pale gypsies in the Roma language.
If you like Tom Waits' way of using self-invented instruments and around the house sounds, wait till you hear this and you will travel and revel !!!!!
They've made a beautiful CD with poet Gunther Abdula, called Bizoagor, to collect money to develop and print schoolbooks for Roma children in eastern europe. All the poetry is translated in english in the tasteful CDcoverpackage with the Roma symbol, the wagonwheel ,'in the sky'.
Money well spent and the music and poetry are an even greater gift in return......

Boya & Big Naughty Moose LVC Leiden 14/06

Rolling Cloud (Tourist On Home Turf 2 )

About an hour or so ago we saw some kind of a Sky Tsunami phenomena,
with streets turning into rivers within minutes.
Although it didn't rain very LONG, it sure rained HARD.
The famous centuries- old Dutch canals and sewers couldn't keep up with these amounts and a shitty odour began to fill the air,
although the system DID prevent us from being flooded in our own manure,
so to say
Makes you think of all these millers and farmers and engineers who kept
Holland dry for a thousand years............,although we're way below sea level like New Orleans or BanglaDesh......
I don't think Al Gore had anything to do with this, but it could be another
example of what we're gonna have to deal with in the near future

WARMING UP (lucky WERFPOP...)

This weekend I went to the Werfpop Festival in the Leidse Hout.
After a week full of Global Warnings and Terrorential Fire and Rain lucky us could now enjoy the WARMING part.
Although some Festival Pro's who saw the flooded Roskilde on TV took no risk
and came in their Glastonbury Wellies, it turned out to be much more of an
informal shorts and slippers thing than a boots event

Lonely Hearts Club Week ?

Last week left me speechless. What can you say in the face of the Bizarre?
Nothing makes sense. Or does it?

It almost reads like some surreal screenplay:

Amsterdam said farewell to it's Favorite Angel
while in Britain a couple of Fake Doctors got
Burned By Their Own Hellbomb,
at Wimbledon it rained Cats and Dogs
and at Wembley only a few kept it dry.
Tomorrow all across the globe Electric Music
will be played as a Warning for Global Warming.
Yesterday when entering the public library
the melody of 'In My Life' filled the room.
That John Lennon still plays a Mean Pianola....
